Productivity is a constant concern for managers and small business owners, but too many methods managers use to keep productivity high end up lowering morale in the process. Discouraging employees from taking time off, overloading employees with tasks, and an autocratic style will all lead to tired, burned-out employees. So how can you keep productivity high while maintaining morale?
One of the best ways is to build a great team. While that seems obvious, a great team isn’t just a productive one. It’s also one that gets along well. Great employees like to work with other great employees, and if everyone is pulling their weight there won’t be resentment amongst them. Going hand in hand with that, sometimes you have to let go of low-performing employees. Replacing poor employees with great ones will boost morale and productivity in a hurry. When assigning new projects, explain the rationale behind them. If people know why they’re doing certain tasks, they’ll not only be happier to do them, but they’ll also do them at a higher level. Finally, don’t be afraid to give people stretch assignments and coach them to learn new types of work. Workers will be more interested in this new challenge, their skills will increase, and more work will get done in the long run. Try these techniques, and you’ll end up with happier, harder-working employees!
