Many candidates will go to great lengths to secure their dream job, so it should come as no surprise that well over half of all hiring managers have caught a lie on a resume. As a small business owner, you should know how to spot a lie, and what to do about it once you do!
While the overwhelming majority of hiring managers claim that any resume lie is a deal-breaker for a job-seeker, almost a third would be willing to look the other way if the lie isn’t too serious. The fact is that most applicants think they can get away with it, not knowing just how easy it is for any potential employer to verify information. The lies range from omissions like leaving off an employer who fired them to telling white lies about how long they’ve been out of work. Serious lies include lying about which college they graduated from, what their degree was, and what skills they have. In all, a person who has been out of work is more likely to lie, while age doesn’t play much of a factor. Gender, however, does: men lie more than women at a significant rate.
