Company culture is important for maintaining a positive work environment and successfully handling difficult situations. Part of creating this is to build a business that is separate from yourself and not reliant on you to solve problems every day. How can you establish an effective company culture and maintain it over the long haul?
Before you do anything else, you should write down a concrete explanation of what you want your company’s culture to be. What values do you want your employees to internalize? How would those values affect their behavior? When you have your plan figured out, it’s time to celebrate the victories and the behavior that aligns itself with your chosen company culture. Highlight it at a team meeting. Give your team member a standing ovation in the office. Find ways to reinforce the behaviors you want to see in your employees. Sometimes, you may need to make a hard decision, and that’s also an opportunity to show your team members how seriously you take your values. If a client is pushing your company in a direction you don’t like, dropping them (no matter how lucrative) can serve as the perfect example to your team of what you’re willing to do to stand up for your company’s culture. Keeping it consistent and positive will result in a happier, healthier, and more successful workplace.
