One of the most underrated communication skills is the ability to read body language. Body language is an indicator of what a person is really saying; if it conflicts with a person’s words it can help you to understand what’s really going on. This will provide any leader with a number of benefits: you can tell if interview candidates are being truthful, or if someone is comfortable with what you’re saying or with what they’re saying.
Of course, you also have to be a careful, thoughtful listener. Empathetic listening – the practice of trying to feel excited when the person you’re speaking to is excited, or angry when they’re angry, will help them trust you. Another great skill for a leader to have is the ability to appear comfortable on video. Today’s world is very visual- and media-centric, and the ability to present yourself well on camera can open a lot of doors for you.
