While mega-corporations get all of the publicity when it comes to cybercrime and hacking, the reality is that nearly half of all such activity targets small business. This gives thieves access to huge amounts of cash and information. In fact, last year saw half of all internet attacks targeted at companies with less than 250 employees. Why is this happening?
The short answer is that huge corporations are constantly striving to improve their cyber-security systems, while small businesses tend to be much slower on the uptake. Phishing scams in particular are targeting small businesses in larger numbers: smaller businesses’ need for a personal touch falls right into their trap.
Another reason for this uptick is because, while small companies have less data to steal, they can often act as a secret back door into the inner workings of the larger companies they do business with. These attacks can put a small business in immediate danger of failure. If you want to be safe, you’ll have to remain vigilant. Invest in your company’s security and do everything in your power to keep your customers’ information safe, and you’ll give your business its best chance at being secure.
