“I had a great site that use to get around 40K unique visits per month. Lots of that was from organic traffic. As a result of Google updates that is down around 75%!… I had to lay off a lot of staff because my business was based on online leads.”
Here’s my reply:
“Penalties suck. No doubt about it.
Worse, if you were hit early – like in 2011 – then you’ve
had to suffer through Google’s really bad communication
about penalties, been fighting it a long time, and bleeding
money the whole time. We feel for you.
By now, you might have done, two, three, or even six
reconsideration requests and been denied each time with
messages so cryptic you’re left wondering what to do next.
Google’s responses at first were complete crap and they
are still not great, just greatly improved, so it can still border
on mind reading to figure out what they want you to do next
… assuming they even care … which of course they don’t.
So what’s a business owner to do?
To start with, don’t despair. There is a fix to this.
But don’t relax either. You do have to do two things.
First, you have to remove the penalty. All penalties are
targeted to impact just certain rankings and specific pages.
Of course, these are the ones where you have been most
aggressive because you want them the most.
This is holding back all of your marketing for those select
search terms and pages and the damage to your business
will not stop until you make amends with Google. Period.
But penalty removal is not enough. It will not restore
those targeted rankings. Once finally free of a penalty,
you still need to adopt content and marketing practices
that create real natural links that both effectively and
safely impact rankings.
Correctly done, by integrating the several search and social
platforms, new SEO is truly just a side-effect of doing the
right kind of marketing. Each channel will amplify the others
and create the kind of human engagement that Google’s
concept of natural linking was originally conceived to be.
Get this right and SEO, link building, and algorithm updates
are no longer on your radar. Fail this, and you and Google
will continue to be at odds, and all of your online marketing
efforts will be crippled.
We have courses and coaching to teach all of this, but if
