Every week, the Marketer’s Braintrust has a coaching call where all of the Braintrust Partners are available to answer questions for our members. There is never a typical question, but they are always interesting questions, and they can vary anywhere from basic questions about website reviews, to complex marketing or SEO questions. Once the question is thrown out there, the partners throw out advice and opinions that will benefit listeners on the call in one way or another.
As I was listening to all of the advice given by each of the partners I am so privileged to work with, I was thinking about the amazing advice one of our panelists had to give so often throughout the 3-hour call.
Whether giving a brilliant nugget of advice about getting into your customers shoes to write more effective ads (way more effective), micro-targeting your facebook audience, split testing, landing page optimization, or whatever – she had brilliant advice every time! Most of you who are members haven’t known her as anyone other than an expert in her field. However, I’ve had the privilege of knowing her since she didn’t know a single thing about internet marketing. Heck, she hardly knew anything about computers!
When I met Andrea Warner about 6 years ago, she had just joined an internet marketing organization I was a part of, but only as a personal coach. Andrea was my friend Eric’s personal coach, and when he introduced Andrea to me, I totally saw why she was so good at motivating Eric. She was a teacher before that, and I could immediately see that caring, nurturing quality in her and we have been good friends ever since.
Learning by osmosis: The crazy thing, though, is that not long after Andrea had been coaching, she learned amazing volumes of information about business and marketing by doing nothing but motivating her coaching clients. She wasn’t even trying to learn this stuff! It just happened through sheer osmosis! It wasn’t long before Andrea went from complete computer n00b to a marketing expert who not only knew how to motivate people to success – she actually showed them how to do it! As soon as Dan & Leslie had the chance, they snatched her up here at the Braintrust, and she’s been helping hundreds of business owners increase their bottom line ever since.
What do YOU want to learn more about? Whether you want to take your business to the next level, pick up a new hobby, or get a raise at your 9 to 5 job – there is almost always something you can learn to help you achieve that goal. The secret? Just start doing it. Don’t decide you have to perfect this, or create room in the budget for that… Just start doing it.
How do you start doing it? Join a forum and start reading people’s posts about the topic. Google it and sign up for every free newsletter possible on the topic. Subscribe to blogs on the topic. Take someone who is an expert at it to lunch. Want to learn a new language? Head to the Library and borrow a set of CD’s. Instead of listening to Radiohead for the 1000th time, pop those Spanish CDs into your car. Instead of TV this month, practice piano. Go to Meetup.com/find and find a meeting in your area that interests you. Stop lurking on the Braintrust calls & forums, and ask a question. Any question!
Eventually, you’ll find that you know more on the subject than 90% of people out there… with little to no effort, and you WILL benefit from that knowledge. Even if that new skill has nothing to do with business, getting good at something new will be good for your emotional well being. What’s that got to do with business? Trust me – when you are in a good place emotionally – your business will be in a better place too.
Get your inspiration from Andrea’s success, and don’t worry about what you don’t know. Just do what you can to learn a little something more on that topic – starting today!
