When I logged into Power Editor today, I was greeted with the announcement that Facebook has combined Broad Categories with Precise Interests.
However, when I went to the ‘Audience’ step of the ad creation process, nothing had changed. Options to list both Precise Interests & Broad Categories were still there, as you can see here:
We did not receive this notification in all Facebook accounts.
We can assume that this means that either Facebook is testing a change, or that we just received an early notification of a change that is being rolled out over time to all accounts in typical Facebook fashion.
I had been notified by my Facebook Ads Rep that Broad Categories were being phased out, so I wasn’t too surprised by this notice.
Facebook states that this merger of Broad Categories & Precise Interests will “make it easier to select the audience that is most relevant to what you are advertising”.
They also state that “existing ads themselves won’t be affected, unless you make edits. However, the audience size may be affected”.
This bears checking into to make sure your ads are still targeting the audience size you expect. It will be interesting to see how this merger of Precise Interests & Broad Categories shakes up the targeting capacity we enjoy with Facebook advertising.
