Patrick Gelsinger, CEO of the software company VMWare, has a novel approach to keeping track of his time: every minute of his day is color-coded. Partner meetings are blue, investor meetings are red, strategy sessions are yellow, and so on. He adds up these minutes and compares his time use to contemporary studies on executive time management to ensure that his schedule is optimized. Katia Beauchamp of Birchbox tells her colleagues to include response deadlines in their emails. It makes prioritization much easier for her, she says. David Nazaryan of marketing company DMG also has a novel approach to email management: he uses a technique called the “Yesterbox,” meaning he reads and responds to yesterday’s emails today.
