Networking is key to the success of your small business. These days, most networking is done online, but you also need to know how to work a room should the opportunity ever arise. It can seem intimidating to step into a roomful of potential leads and try to impress each and every one of them, but with the right techniques you shouldn’t have a problem.
The first thing you need to do is say hello. Too many people are shy about approaching others, so you should be the one to break the ice. Make eye contact, offer them your hand, and introduce yourself. Once you’re engaged in a conversation, it’s better to refrain from having an agenda. Of course, you’re there to find others who will help your business grow, but first you need to build relationships. Start with small talk and move on from there. If your business slips naturally into the conversation, so much the better, but don’t push it. Don’t be afraid to move on if it becomes clear that your efforts are going to waste. Not everyone is going to be interested, and that’s okay. Politely thank the other person or people for their time and move on. When you do meet those leads you click with, be sure to follow up with an email or a phone call!
