Conducting job interviews is an arduous task. You’re looking for the perfect question, while the candidate is looking for the perfect answer. It’s important to hire the best possible people, but how can you tell through an interview what someone will really be like to work with?
First, you need to kill the power dynamic. Almost any interviewee will be nervous, and you need them to feel comfortable so you can get to know them. Rather than rattling off a list of questions, try having a conversation. This will tell you what it’s like to actually have this person around on the job. How easy are they to talk to? Can you bounce ideas off of each other? And definitely don’t bother with asking any outrageous questions like how many marbles can fit in the Empire State Building. Those kinds of questions don’t help. Instead, ask questions built to spur candidates’ creativity. Late in the hiring process, you may even want to ask candidates to give a presentation. This will test their preparedness and communication skills; two key elements for any employee in almost any business. If you follow this advice, you can be sure you’ll hire the right person every time!
