When you are trying to push your website and drive up your SEO many people mistakenly think that if they overuse their keywords then this will be over effective for this mission. This is not at all true, in fact it will be counter productive. Why is that? Because you will end up competing against yourself. This is what is called keyword cannibalization. You are sabotaging your own self. When you do this you are taking your authority away and splitting it up into all the pages that are using the same keyword. You are de-valuating your page, decreasing your crawl budget and ultimately your conversion will suffer. The best action is to reorganize, consolidate and find new key words for a fresh start.
- Keywords need to be specific so that page content isn’t categorized into a broader group
- Cannibalization of keywords negatively impacts the number of people who visit your website
- Search engines may only spend a limited amount of time and effort combing through your website
“When you have multiple pages ranking for the same keyword, you’re actually competing with yourself.”
