Learning to Lead the Way

Not every small business is a success, but more often than not the ones that fail do so not because of a poor plan or a bad idea, but because of poor leadership. Cultivating good leadership qualities takes time, but anyone can do it.

Leadership isn’t about being the best person. It’s about bringing out the best in in your team. You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room to be a great leader. One of the best things you can do to grow as a leader is to volunteer more. Most people are fine with being told what to do, but if you want to be a leader the best place to start is by volunteering to lead a team or project. Whether it’s a project at your church or coaching a youth soccer team, you can gain a lot of great experience this way. You’ll also get feedback on your leadership skills. Any great leader is also a great listener, and if you listen you’ll know whether your style is working. If you want to be a better leader for your small business, take some time outside of work to cultivate the skills you need.
