As a small business owner, you may sometimes be called upon to speak in public. You may even have to speak in front of experts in your field, which can be especially nerve-wracking. What if you screw up? What if you’re not prepared enough? Stage fright is natural, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be a top-notch public speaker regardless!
One of the best things you can do before going up to speak is to practice. Practice until you could present in your sleep. Practice in front of anyone who will listen, and get their feedback whenever possible. You can’t practice too much; each run through your presentation will only ingrain it more into your mind. Next, you should market yourself before your presentation to build an audience. After all that time spent practicing, you definitely want an audience to come and witness your presentation (and network with you afterward). Make friends with people on social media. Find a social influencer to talk about your presentation on Twitter. Do whatever in-person networking you can. All of these things will lead to a more successful speech every time!
