It seems as though it happens every other week nowadays: a company is hacked, and the data of their employees and clients is leaked to the public. It even happens to the federal government on an alarmingly regular basis. It’s not just giant corporations and governments that are being targeted, though; as a small business owner it’s important to learn how to protect yourself from a cyber attack.
The first thing to realize is that physical security is just as important as cyber security. Many cyber attacks succeed because the attackers find a local way in. One flash drive left in the wrong place can be enough to open the floodgates. Identifying who should and should not be in particular areas and asking any suspicious people to leave are good ways to ward off any security breaches that may lead to cybercrime. Next, you should have a strong plan to keep passwords safe at your office. Simple passwords, repeating passwords, and passwords written down on Post-It notes are all great ways to invite hackers into your accounts. Finally, it’s important to keep software up to date. The right software can alert you of a security breach, but only if you’re using the best, newest versions.
